245 Windshield Defrost Problems 200 1990

1990 245 230K:

I've searched the archives for as much info as possible and still need some help targeting this problem.

I haven't had good defrost for a while and just lived with it w/o even noticing. Here's what works: I get warm air out of the center/dash outlets and the floor outlets at the same time. The 3-button (defrost/floor/recirc) switch does nothing.

Based on the previous Brickboard suggestions I've taken away much of the underdash sound insulation, glove box, and side center-consol panels and looked for disconnected hoses. Everything is fine on the passenger side; haven't inspected yet behind the center consol or the driver's side. Under the hood all hoses leading into the firewall looked fine but I wasn't sure of the exact hose.

Note: some time ago relatives from Sweden (Saab people) let their children play in the Volvo. A few weeks later when I needed some heat it sounded like Las Vegas when I pushed the defrost or floor button. Coins were probably dropped down the defrost vents.

Can anyone help pinpoint the problem? I still have the center consol open to install new instrument lights and fix the temp. control slide.

Thanks,
Rob
