I recently acquired a pristine example of a 1978 245 wagon. I purchased "Agnes" from the original owner with 108,000 documented miles on the ticker. As I work my way through all the systems I have found that the in-tank pump is not functioning, not surprising the age but none the less. I did all the tests (suggested by previous posts) at start up like listening at the filler pipe and jumping the fuses. So I am pretty sure it is dead. This problem only causes a minor start-up hesitation but I want everything to work as designed.
My question is whether anyone knows if the 78 has a second fuel system relay like ever other Volvo I have. Mine has one BIG GREEN one up under the driver’s side dash near the bulb failure relay. But for the life of me I can’t find the second relay. I have looked in all the obvious places like under the hood, near the ECU, behind the glove box. I have found in the past that one slightly faulting relay could cause a failure of the in-tank pump. I have never found this documented anywhere but it has happened to me twice. I think the condition has more to do with the power requirements of the fuel injection system rather than the in-tank pump.
So before I tackle the in tank pump project I wanted to do that final relay test. By the way I spent a considerable amount of time on the Brickboard which is why I am also convinced there is a second relay.
Thanks
