Cylindrical device SIPS sensor? S90-V90

I was removing the side panel to access the seatbelt roller and noticed a red cylynder which asuming it's part of the SIPS(side impact protection system. (Does it only exist on the passenger side?)

I was wandering if anyone knew how this worked.
