Speedo cable repair 200 1984

I posted a query a few hours ago to which Rob Bareiss kindly relied, regarding detaching the tamper-proof plastic rings on the speedo head. i also came across the thread from some time ago in the archives, to which Volvoda posted some good info.
The reason I got into this is because the speed is kind of twitchy. The reason its twitchy is because the plastic retaining ring that holds the cable into the speed head is broken. So, my next question, after trying assorted fixes this afternoon, is "Has anyone had any success in holding the cable in the head without the OEM plastic ring?" If so, what is the secret. I don't relish having to purchase a new cable when the only thing wrong with the one I have is a broken bit of plastic. I did try epoxy on the plastic, but the inner spring pressure was too great for it to hold.
