can the overdrive solenoiid be tested off the car 1989 700

I have an 1989 780 turbo and I doesnt go into 4th gear until its warmed up.. Fluid level seems fine..relay replaced already. Can I take the solenoid off hte car and test it. let me know....Thanks...Jeffrey
