installing Boge automatic strut 200 1990

Greetings all-

I am in the midst of installing the strut on my wife's 244, and I have one question. I got the strut from IPD, which seemed to go well. The strut came out of the box compressed, with no strap or anything holding it down. For some reason, I thought that the strut would come uncompressed, and then I would install it that way. Which is correct?
