Hey Everyone,
I've been wanting to replace the waist seals or outer scraper seals on my 240 door windows for quite a while now. It seems like those seals tend to shrink after a while leaving about a 1/4" gap at either end where water can easily get inside the door. I'm sure this is a contributing factor in why 240 doors are so prone to rusting along the bottom seam. They also tend to get eaten by the UV if you live in someplace that gets lots of hot sun.
Apparently Volvo doesn't sell that scraper seal on it's own, you have to buy the piece of chrome or anodized black trim with it too so it ends up costing you well over $200 just to replace the outer scrapers on a 244, 245 or 264. Not sure what it is on a 242 o4 262 but I'm sure it's close to the same price. This seems really silly to me since it's very easy to remove and replace the waist seal and there's no reason you should have to replace the metal trim too, other than to sate Volvo's desire to make lots of money. I did a lot of looking around and unfortunately it seems that nobody sells replacement weatherstripping with a similar profile to the window waist seal on our 200 series Volvos :(
Anyways, I have orchestrated a couple of group buys of weatherstipping products for the Volvo 1800 during the last several months (sourced the products from Europe). In looking through what my suppliers have available I think I may have come up with a way of adapting and combining a couple of their more conventional weatherstripping products to make a pretty decent substitute for the waist seal/outer window scraper for the 200 series.
I have to do a little testing but if it works like I think it will my guess is it will end up costing about $110 - $120 USD plus maybe $10 shipping for enough stuff to do a 4 door car and everything would come pre cut and ready to install.
I'd be prepared to bring in a bunch of weatherstripping and make up the kits if there was enough interest in it. Please let me know if you'd be interested by e-mailing me at rojSPAM_OUT@telus.net ** REMOVE THE SPAM_OUT PART TO E-MAIL ME**
Thanks,
Roj (Roger)
