M 41 J-type front bearing 1800 1971

I am rebuilding this gearbox.
The front bearing is shielded on one side...the inside.
I don't remember ever seeing a shielded bearing used
in any M40 or M41.
I don't know the history of this gearbox.
Should this bearing be shielded? My guess is no.
Thanks for the help.
