Water Pump Woes 200 1989

I read and re-read the FAQs on water pump install on B230F. I pushed and pushed the water pump upward against the upper notch on the engine block. It still leaked. What do I do?

Also, I had a lot of trouble putting the bolts into the block. What's up with that?
