Strut bearing - what are symptoms of failure? 700 1991

What would the symptoms of a failing upper strut bearing be? I have posted here a few times about the clunk (metal on metal "chink" sound from the strut) in the driver's side front suspension, and I have narrowed it down to something going on in the strut assembly. But there are no symptoms of strut insert failure, just a clunk when I turn right, and then a clunk back when I come out of the turn. Interestingly, there is a slight catch in the steering when I am at high speed on an interstate "on" ramp - I bear left, then as I steer gently back to "straight" there is a slight catch in the steering. I am suspecting these are related, and I suspect the upper strut bearing. Strut rod bushings, tie rods, sway bar links, lower ball joints are all new. Isn't it fun chasing after these annoying symptoms? But the joy that comes when we find the cause and solve the problem - makes it all worth it! But this one has had me stumped for some time now.
