higher amperage alternator 200 1981

I will need a new alt for my wagon. It has the 55 amp bosch. Slip rings are scored but good, so replacing brushes probably won't do anything. Charges okay for engine operation, but dies a horrible death if lights are used for ~1 hour (not fun to find out on I90). No voltage boost when lights turned on (fades actually), so I'm committed to the new (or getting the 55 rebuilt).
Can I put in say a 70 amp alt? Car has the external VR (original) which indicates it might have had the 70. Are they compatible, same size, able to install with success? I'd like more juice as we go into winter and run in the dark with wipers, heater and lights on. Anyone use the adjustable regulators that put out 14.8 volts?
