My 544 lost power while cruising on the highway and started to overheat and ping hard, a quick road side assessment showed there was gas in the float bowls, the points were operating well and I had sparks in all four cylinders. The car would rev fine but lose power when in gear under load. I limped back home for a closer look and found that the SU needle had fallen out of the housing and was wedged in the jet! The retaining screw was just hanging out loose in the housing.
In more than a decade of SU carbing this is a new one for me. Any suggestions for prevention or should I chalk it up as a freak accident?
