taking apart M41+OD 120-130

I just acquired an M41+OD unit as one piece. With my limited experience with these so far, I don't even know if there is oil in it. How can I check if there is oil in the M41, or the OD? Are each unit seperate "compartements" such that I can safely detach each at the middle without splling oil all over? In other words, they don't share the same oil, do they?
