Keyless reomte works only 5feet or less away. Has new battery. Ideas? 96 960

My 1996 960's keyless remote will only work if you are standing right next to the car. I've tried two new,just out of the package batteries in it just to be sure. Does anyone have any ideas about this? Maybe reprogramming (if possible)or a bad receiver in the car? I'm stumped.
