I'm puzzled. Just purchased this 87 244. Seems to be in nice condition, mostly all Volvo serviced up to 120K miles or so. 151K on clock. Previous owner states he ran out of fuel and thinks he burnt out one or both of the fuel pumps (in-tank and main) since there seems to be no fuel reaching the injectors. He states that a Volvo mechanic who came to his home attached a fuel line to a portable gas can and ran it to the vaccuum side of the intake and the car ran. I did not see this. However, I purchased the car and brought it home. I just replaced the in-tank fuel pump and jumped the 4-6 fuses and having taken the return fuel hose off the fuel regulator, I can see that both pumps work. I confirmed this by jumping the 4-6 fuses and can literally feel both pumps pumping. Unjumpered, there is apparently no juice to the pumps. Here's what I do notice. The fuel relay (white one under the dash, passenger side) vibrates like crazy. Unlike my other 240's which click, this one buzzes and vibrates in your hand. I have 6 relays from other cars that I've tried and they all buzz when you turn the key on.
Would love to hear from those who might have the next step for me.
I'm also curious about the wiring harness. This one looks good and I want to know if this '87 is susceptible to the deteriorating sheath of earlier years. What years are included in the wiring harness problems? (I do have an 83 245 that I just purchased which has obvious wiring harness problems!)
As always, thank you for the help!
Sincerely,
JBeechcraft
