Erratic Fuel Gauge 444-544 1953

I replaced the rusted fuel sending unit with what I believed was a reliable unit, from either a 544 or Amazon, both 6 volt. The gauge shows only 3/4 full with a full tank and when it reaches half-full, the needle starts to erratically jump from 1/4 to full on the fuel gauge's scale. I'm afraid to permanently damage the fuel gauge, so does anyone have a explaination for this and more important a suggested fix?
