BAM ! explosion and lost R34 A/C in a white mist 700 1987

My A/C was working fine, then suddenly, while idling, a big bang came from the front engine area, then a long loud hiss and white/gray cloud, then quick cycling from the compressor clutch that also tells me the juice is gone. Can't see what it was that let go, haven't yet taken the skid pan off. But all hoses, pipes and connections I can see look normal. Is there a common point in the system that gives way first if pressure gets too high? And what causes it to do that?
