shift lever boot - automatic transmission 200 1981

Hmmm, all I want to do is replace the smashed plastic housing around the bottom of the shift lever (automatic trans), but I can't figure out how to get the thing apart, and the manuals just seem to avoid the issue. I pried apart the plastic housing on top of the lever, but don't see any way to do it from there. I do see a pin in the bottom end of the push rod, below where it passes through the yoke to which the light is attached, but I don't want to push that out unless I have to -- how hard is it to get it back together? And even if I did get the push rod out, it doesn't look like that would release the plastic housing on top. Maybe its best just to cut a slot in the replacement housing and slip it around the shaft?

By the way, there's no overdrive on this car (but I wish there was) -- 81 GLT wagon.

And while I'm at it, the light is trashed, too. Is it possible to replace just the light and socket? The metal shield seems to be intact, though I didn't look too carefully at it.

Any suggestions appreciated!
