I'm driving the car that was until a week ago my husband's primary vehicle, a 1987 760 Turbo. He is kicking back in California with my 1989 Land Cruiser. We've had the Volvo a year now. It often stalls at low speeds when are braking for a light or simply driving at low speeds around a parking lot and let off on the gas. It restarts right away and always idles fine. It usually only happens when the engine is warm and has been warm for a while. Our mechanic (another state) looked it over when we bought it and could find nothing wrong. Over the last year my husband has done all the sort of tune-up type things and has replaced the plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter, etc. Eventually he just got used to the stalling, but I am not as patient as he is. Safety is also a concern since I'm usually driving the kids around. Once this became my primary car I put STP in the tank and filled it with 91 octane (we had been using 87), and it seems to be better, having stalled only twice in the last week. Could that have really improved it? Should I be running this on 91 octane gas anyway? If this stalling problem rings a bell with anyone, I'd love to hear your thoughts. We will be trading the car in for a new one in a couple months, so I'm not up for any expensive repairs.
The other problem is the blower. It worked occasionally at first, maybe one day in 10, but packed it in totally a few months ago. Call me fussy, but I can't face the next two months in Texas without A/C or a defroster in my car. It seems to me that it needs a new blower motor. I read in the FAQ that this blower motor is badly positioned and tend to fill up with water and go belly up, and that one can replace it cheaply with a GM mid-80s blower motor for Chevy Citation or Impala with AC. Is it an easy or complex job to replace the blower? I drove a 1977 MGB for 10 years, so I am not shy about doing some easy engine work.
