88 760gle AC fault code diagnosis 700

my 760 continuously flashes the AC light while the car is running. according to the fault code stuff in the FAQ section the 1-5-1 code it is generating is for the generator? i don't quite know what to make of this. is my alternator bad? that's my guess because after i got home the battery was dead and it doesn't seem to be holding a charge. anyone have experience with this?
