Steering Linkage Question 900 1995

Vehicle : 1995, 964, 152,171 miles.

When changing out the snow tires today, I noticed side to side movement of both front tires. Drivers side was noticeably worse.

I took the tires off and moved the disc side to side and noticed the movement was occuring at the end of the tie rod that goes into the steering rack (not at the tie rod end that attaches to the spindle).

I don't notice any play when driving, the tires wear perfectly, no unusual noises when turning in either direction.

Either the rack, or the tie rods, or both are obviously worn. Is is possible.....when the engine is running..... that the rack is pressurized enough to push the tie rods outwards with enough force so as they don't have any play in them? I wish I checked for this when I had the car up in the air a few hours ago.

Our 98 S90 does not have this side to side play but it only has 68,500 miles.

Any experience here as to whether it's the rack or the tie rods or both? Any ideas as to what it's going to take to fix it?

Thanks,

DEWFPO
