When I remove the throttle body from my 88 240 wagon, I discovered the amount of gunk I expected.
I briefly used a rag wet with carb cleaner, then reached for the screwdriver & pocket knife.
The instructions from IPD specifically state to not use anything that can scratch the interior surfaces, or new oily deposits will again build up.
However, I just used the scraping approach then followed up with 00 steel wool to polish the inside like a babies bottom (well not quite that smooth).
Anyway the car runs smoother than it ever has since I've owned it (almost 6 years, 62,000 miles).
I told my wife if I had paid someone to clean the TB, and after it ran like this, I would say it was money well spent!
I did have to remove the little valve (idle speed or something) from the bottom to clean out the steel wool residue but other than that it seems to have paid off.
