starter unit or just solenoid? 700 1990

My 740 GL, '90 with Rigina won't start. No starter cranking.
First, this problem was intermittent started several weeks ago.
And yesterday morning, I couldn't start my car after several try. I thought I need new 'neutral safty switch' .
Before buying this switch I tried one thing last night. I put connection between the positive terminal from the battery and the sorenoid terminal (which has green line connected in my car). This works and starter turned. I cleaned the NSS and the solenoid terminal. I could start the car last night without any problem so I thought my problem is gone at least for temporarily (but I thought I may need the NSS soon anyway). This morning, same thing happend. This 740 won't start. I trid the connection between the solenoid terminal and positive cable. This time, looks like no current is going thru the solenoid (Battery voltage was fine). No starter turn. Completely dead. Do you think I did something wrong?

Anyway, I need to replace whole starter unit or solenoid. I put this starter at Volvo dealer in '98. I found at advanceautoparts.com has the solenoid $40. Volvo internet parts shops doesn't have just solenoid but whole starter unit around $105 with $50 core.
Does anybody have good or bad experience just replacing solenoid?
