Hello everyone,
I’m in the middle of changing the turbo on my 1988 745. Mitsu turbo.
Happily the manifold came off without breaking any studs.
The rebuilt turbo came today and I need to transfer the wastegate actuator and bypass valve from my old turbo to the new one.
I have the Haynes manual and Volvo green manual TP 31003/1 (1987) but they only deal with the Garrett turbo.
Can I just use all the torques and procedures for the Garrett on this turbo?
I’m especially wondering about:
a. basic position of rod link (2-5mm “pre tension”(?)?
b. charge pressure (7.0-7.8 psi) ?
c. bypass valve checking (fully open at 3.2 psi)?
d. torque for turbo to manifold bolts (9 in/lb- 33ft/lb- 45 deg)?
I checked the volvotechinfo.com sight and the TP for this subject (group 25 Intake and Exhaust systems) has the same number and page count as the one I have; so I’m not sure it is updated with the Mitsu info.
Is there another Volvo green book for the Mitsu turbo?
Finely, (probably not), is it better to bolt the whole turbo to the manifold then put the manifold with turbo on the block or separate the turbo from exhaust housing, bolt the housing to manifold, bolt manifold/housimg to block then put turbo back? I’m worried about breaking that little locating pin or banging the turbo vane. Maybe either way is OK.
Thanks very much for any advice.
Chuck
