B230FT oil cooler question - water cooled vs air cooled 1994

I just got a 1994 B230FT engine for my 1990 760. It has an oil-to-coolant cooler instead of the front mounted oil-to-air cooler I've seen on all my other cars. I'm sure this would aid in warming the oil in cold weather but what is the reason for the change? My good sense says that trying to keep the oil below 200ºF with 195º coolant just won't work as well as doing it with ambient temperature air.

So, is it more efficient, or just less costly?
