While viewing a post regarding diff oil changes, the thought occurred to me that I forgot to check if my 760 and 240 have vents on the diffs. MB's have this feature and I'm thinking everybody does it. The MB vent is a small cylinder threaded into a port on the top (obviously) that has a crimped cap on it.
The downside is that after 100 - 150 k miles, the vent gets gunked up and seals. This then causes a problem when the diff warms up, especially in summer, because it results in a slight pressure in the case. The diff lube will then be forced out the seals, making folks think they have bad seals. I know several MB techs that have changes diff seals for customers and then just cleaned the vent out to make sure it doesn't happen again. Some would actually talk the owners out of the seal replacement and just clean the vent.
So, if the Volvo rear diffs have a vent, the same situation could result. Can anybodyrecall from memory if they have a vent up there?
