Perfomance improvement possiblities.... 200

I drive an '88 240 and i'm looking for a way to make it a little quicker. The most important would be a little better acceleration from a stop, then better acceleration for passing (esp. on two lane highways, that can get kind of scary in my car) etc... Any good ways to do this? I'm thinking of a VX cam perhaps, but i don't know it that will really give me any low end benefits. My transmission, an AW-70, shifts at 3K almost every time and i don't really like to rev it up any higher than that. For example, if i go over 3K when i'm going past 40MPH (what's that going into 4th?) i get this rattle from somewhere under the hood. Also, the car wasn't really well maintained before i got it, for the first 80K of it's life or so, and i'm trying to go easy on the engine as much as possible (i need it to last until i can do my dream B230FT and M46 conversion). Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
