960 Transmission modes 900

Curious about transmission mode operation on my 96 965. The button for modes "S" and "E" stays depressed when pushed. The button for mode "W" does not, but the light for "W" comes on. I've never even used the "W" mode, but was wondering if this is how it's supposed to work. Does it simply over-ride whatever mode you were in and then you're supposed to deselect?
