Hi All,
Just bought my first brick...1990 764T and have a couple questions I hope somebody can help me with. Owned nothing but much newer Nissans before this. Car has 140k and runs great, but my dream is for a 302 and a 5-speed. Anyway, my CEL came on last week and I suspect the thermostat needs to be replaced because the heat takes FOREVER to come on. It's also been like ten below here (upstate NY) for the last couple weeks, so maybe it's just THAT cold out that it takes longer??. So, three questions...(a)could a bad thermostat cause the CEL to come on, (b)how tough is that (thermostat) to replace myself (for a novice/intermediate DIYer), and (c)does it matter if I get the 197 deg or 191 deg? (those are the choices on ipd, anyway)
Also, the car loses oil at about a quart/1000 miles. It doesn't outright leak when it's parked (no drip marks on the ground), but I noticed residue all over the bottom of the engine when I changed it a few weeks ago. It was like that when I bought it in December, too. Does the turbo eat this much oil, or could it be something like a clogged flametrap? I read in other posts that the crankcase vent is different on the turbo than on the n/a car, but didn't see specific info on where it is or how to clean it on this car. Any help there would also be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
