960 clapping noise around 3500 rpm? 900

Hey board
On my 1994 960, around 3500-3900 RPM's, I get a pretty loud "clapping" sound coming from the engine. After that, the engine is very quiet. It can be heard pretty easily from outside the car. Recent oil change was to no avail. Any other ideas?
