Tip on 960 timing belt replacement. 900

when replacing the belt there is a hidden post directly under the crank pulley that cant be seen unless you look under the car. there is just enough room to feed the belt between the pulley and the post sticking out.i can only imagine how many brand new belts have been instantly striped out on start up and possible valve damage.i paid an ex- volvo tech who now has his own shop to replace the 1'st one if i could watch and pick up any tips.well this little tip was well worth the cost of the job. 99% of the job is done from the top and that 1% is what to watch for under the crank pulley.i dont know if the belt can be wrapped properly if this step is missed, but that doesn't mean someone may stretch and force the belt anyway and be in for an unfortunate surprise.the engine is to be hand cranked 2 revolutions to make sure the marks re-align so if the belt is stuck on that post i'm sure this would be difficult.also the 92 seems to have a bit more power than the 94 so i'm going to have to count and locate the timing marks on the 94 when compared to the 92 and see if they're in the exact location.neither car has visible timing marks on the cam gears except the ones i marked before belt removal. it is possible the cam gears between the 2 engines could be off a tooth or two from previous replacements be fore i aquired them.just a tip. dave
