1989 ecu 240 dl ecu failure 200

I have an 1989 240 dl that has a failing ecu. It works intermittently causing car to stall . On the board of the ecu there is visible evidience of burning near a chalky grey component that looks like a resistor. There is a number do207 next to it. The computer part number is bosch 0280 000 561. I have heard that these computers are garbage and can be replaced with a computer from an 90-93 with bosch numbers that end in 951. Is this true? And is it likely that there is a secondary problem causing ecu damage/failure?
Thanks in advance mike w
