bypassing circuitry to the overdrive solenoid 200 1981

I have been trying to fix the overdrive in my car for a while and I'm giving up. While I was interested in keeping he car as original as possible, I have come to the realization that it's not going to happen, So,I am interested in bypassing the normal circuitry and building something something simpler to engage the overdrive solenoid. I'm assuming htat it would require a constant flow to remain engaged. Assuming that it is not the solenoid itself that is the problem (From what I've read , it rarely is.) If anyone has tried this/Doesn't think it would work/etc... could you please write and save me a weekend of pointless mechanicing. If I go ahead with it, and it works, I'll post a complete decription in the tech forum.
thanks,
casey
