installing a used windshield 200

The glass shop here told me that the used windshield I had (which I pulled out of an '82 240)didn't fit in my '79 and they even showed it to me 'installed' with a gap between the chrome trim and the body. They sold me a new windshield and installed it but now I found out that the volvo 240 windshields were identical for years if not through the entire production of the 240 series. I think I was taken for a ride by the glass shop but I could also just be a victim of their ignorance(and mine).
I'm interested in learning more ie: whether the clip kit cannot be used, if it's possible to lay the windshield in and make it look as if it doesn't fit for a customer,etc.
