High idle temperature? 200 1990

I've noticed that when my 1990 240 dl is just sitting and idling, the temperature gauge will start to rise fairly quickly (It takes about five minutes to get slightly below the orange marking, not sure if it'll go higher) As soon as I start moving again, the temperature gauge will rapidly drop down to about 1/4 of the gauge (which seems to be the normal operating temperature). This has happened on extremely hot days, as well as fairly cool days (60 degrees or so...)

Is this normal?
