A.C compressor - should I use the same model and where to buy? 700 1989

Mechanic advises that that the a/c compressor (European aftermarket system) is due for replacement.

Must I purchase a compressor of the same model or can I buy another model?

In view of the absurd price of a/c components in Europe I intend to purchase it in the USA. Any recommendations on where to get the best product for the lowest price?
