Transmission shifter 200 1983

Just wondering, although the auto transmission seems to be working fine the metal shaft on the shifter is sometimes too hot to touch and sometimes stone cold in my same day to day driving. What do you think would cause this? Had the tran fixed a year ago -new seals/fluid so no leaks.Whats the go? Any ideas?
