alternator swap 200

my alternator died tonight, so i'm preparing to install a new one tomorrow. just how difficult is it to do? i'm also wondering how difficult it is to upgrade to a better alt, considering the bosch units are known to not provide high levels of voltage. has anyone out there ever installed a second alternaor to power an audio system? thanks for the help!
