I've got a big rip in one of my old boots, so I ordered a new pair of boots and looked for this repair in the Bentley, which seems only to cover a complete removal of the steering rack.
Keeping in mind I've got almost 200,000 miles, and the sticker in the trunk says I've got steering gear type 3 (I think that's ZF), a few questions:
1. What is the simplest way to replace the boots? I'm hoping there might be a fix for this that doesn't involve getting a new alignment, or specialized tools like the Volvo ball joint separater that probably costs at least a C note or more. But if necessary I'd get whatever I need.
2. Should I lubricate the rack while the boots are off? And if so, with what and how? Is there any other maintenance I should do while I'm in there? (that's 3 questions, I know)
3. The boots that I ordered didn't come with clamps. Do I need to get the Volvo clamps are will any hose clamp work, or maybe those white plastic tie thingies?
4. With a questionable service history, I'm thinking new power steering fluid couldn't hurt. Replacing the fluid isn't in any manual or service schedule, but come on. The stuff can't last forever. What is the procedure for flushing out the old fluid?
Many thanks.
