How to mount Fuel pressure regulator ? 700 1989

Having decided my the FPR on my 745 is bad, see other post, I removed it and replaced it with another from my 744, just to check if it helped (it didn't).

The question is, how the heck are you supposed to mount one of these.? On this car the FPR fits into a cup on the end of the fuel rail. no mounting bolt or clamp, just a very tight friction fit with an O ring suppying the seal. It is held in place by two bolts which hold it to a bracket positioned on the rail.
I could not forse this thing back in no how. I finally got two long bolts in place of the stock mounting bolts and by tightening them I got the FPR to almost seat in the cup, then used channel locks to force it the rest of the way.
Frankly I'm amazed it didn't leak as I was sure I could have destroyed thhe O ring with the force I was putting on it.
Anyone have experience here? I think this car has the LH 3.0 injection.
