Air control question 200 1983

My 1983 245 is surging in the mourning now. I have been lurking here on the BB for some time and I feel the best place to start looking would be the IACV. I think I have read where others have put a regular valve in its place. I will of course, start of cleaning the iac but if that does not work, what kind of valve can I put here? And can I run a control cable to it from inside car.(like old choke)? and will I need to put a resistor in the IACV curcuit to make the computer think it is still there? Or, am I just as insane as I am broke?
