Speed Sensor 900 1995

Hi Guys, I am being told by my Volvo Garage that the Speed Sensor is faulty on my 95 960 Auto box which accounts for the box going into "get you home mode" ie 3rd and 4th only after driving for a short while. Any thoughts on this, Gear position switch has just been replaced so it should'nt be that. Comments would be appreciated.
