Need help with rear glass defog and swich. 200 1987

I have taken the time to read some of the postings on this site, and have come to the conclusion that there are many knowledgeable people responding to them. I hope one of them, if not all, can help me. I own a 1987 Volvo 245 and have discovered that my rear glass defog is not working. Likewise, I have noticed that the defog switch will not click to the "on" position. Nor does it light up. So, I'm assuming the switch is not getting any power. I should however mention that both my rear wiper, third brake light, and license plate lights do work. Upon closer inspection of the rear window lines (threads... I'm not really sure what they're called), I noticed that a few were broken. Now, would this prevent my defog switch from working properly? Or is the problem at hand bigger than just the broken threads? If the broken lines are at the heart of the problem, should I invest in that IPD Rear Defrost Repair Kit? Any and all suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
Thank you,
Yvonne

P.S. I'm loving my wagon and I'm looking forward to keeping her going for many, many more miles to come... btw she's gone 121,564 mi. so far!!
