1988 740 GLE Turbo Wagon Electrical Issues 700

Hi there. Rookie Volvo owner here. I'll post a full intro soon, but first I have an interesting question.
We just bought this wagon,174k mi,75k on rebuilt engine, and everything works fine except that the driver's side headlamps (hi and low beam) are DIM! When I switch from hi to low and back again, the engine wants to stall out; if I'm signaling for a left turn or have the 4-way flashers on, it WILL stall out. UNLESS the front left turn signal lamp is unplugged at the socket. Then it's fine and I can see into the next time zone. Also, the upper side brake lights don't work(bulbs are ok) and the fog lamps are inop. I suspect that the combination switch is shorting out internally, but any other possibilities are open for investigation. This car has been in New Mexico for a few years at least, so I think that corrosion is not a major concern. Still, I've been wrong before....All ideas are welcome!
