Hello Bricksters:
I feel like such an idiot...I will post this confession and hope no one else has gone through this.
I've had rattling problems with my Girling front calipers for years....I've replaced the pads twice, installed the caliper sliding pin rebuild kit and still the problem persisted. Finally last week,I got the loaded rebuilt calipers and VOILA!! I saw my mistake.
The previous owner's mechanic had installed the Girling pad spring BEHIND the slot,so that the springs hooked onto the area behind the slot. Being a newbie to 700 series, I thought this was how they were supposed to be installed. WRONG!! The spring is designed to push against the INSIDE of the slot. Be sure that it is installed this way,as it has a tendency to slip out behind. Now my flaming red brick sounds solid when I go over rough pavement. I've even turned off my radio for the past few days and enjoyed the silence.
Hope this helps other bricksters with sliding calipers.
