mechanic replaced timing belt then engine died next day 200 1982

A friend of mine brought her car to a garage and they told her she needed a new timing belt. They put one on and the next day she broke down, now they are telling her the camshaft is bad and that caused the new timing belt to be stripped and shredded.
Do you think they did something wrong like not put in a new tensioner or something? Why would the enginge just sieze? The poor girl has sunk $800 into this 21 year old 242DL in the last month.
I explained it would need some work after sitting for 2 years but this is getting bad.Now she may need another engine and there aren't a lot of B-21's around here.
