RPM Sensors 200

Do these sensors typically crap out altogether or are there signs that the sensor is going to go bad?

Also, through searching the archives, people recommend the "white" band (found on the connector wire) as opposed to the older "yellow" band sensor. Is it just a longevity thing or are there other issues that the yellow band sensor has?

My '90 240DL has the yellow band. Trying to find a solution to my shaky idle.

Thanks,
Zuda
