'88 740 dying problem - diagnose 700 1988

I'm helping a friend solve a chronic dying problem on an '88 740. If the car has not been driven in a few days it's fine. However, after a bit of use, it dies over & over. First we tried giving the fuel pump relay a tap & this seemed to help. However, that may have been a fluke because the relay has been recently replaced (we found) & tapping now has no effect. Apparently the ignition & intake checks out OK. Here's the odd thing; When it dies the car appears to suffer a full electrical failure...no dash lights, no nothing. If it just died, I'd think the fuel pump relay or pump itself the culprit. With the full elec. system down, would you think the ignition switch could be the fault? what else should we look for? Any good ideas appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Chris
