240 overheating quickly

back again. this time concerning my 1990 240 wagon with about 170k miles. the temp gauge hits the redline pretty quickly telling me it's overheating. if i turn the heat on high it cools it down and that keeps me going but my windows don't go down yet so it's getting a bit stuffy on these nice days. also the heat/defroster seems to warm-up quicker than usual.

i had a new fan clutch and thermostat installed in august 2002 and a new water pump in october 2001. all the belts seem fine.

i am thinking coolant temp sending unit or another bad thermostat? obviously i am hoping it's the cheap stuff. any suggestions?

thanks in advance as always!
