AC rocker switch add-on 200

Yesterday I managed to get the AC on my daughter's old 1986 240 to stop shorting out by fiddling with the AC thermo switch knob and cleaning off the connections at the back, etc. However, it started me thinking.....I'm guessing the thermo switch might be going bad. If I were to buy a AC rocker-type switch (from a newer 240) and place it alongside the thermo switch, it may prolong the life of the thermo switch because we wouldn't be constantly turning the knob. It would be more convenient--to turn on the AC we'd just flip the switch rather than turn the knob... knob could stay at a convenient setting. Am I thinking straight here???
If the answer is "yes," then how would I connect the rocker switch? I'm guessing I'd cut into the green wire which is currently connected to the thermo switch. The new AC rocker switch has just two connection sites (as far as I can tell from the photos). Does it make a difference which end of the cut green wire goes where? Also, if it turns out that the green wire is too short to extend to the new switch and I need a little "extension wire", do I have to buy a specific gauge of wire? (I don't know much about electrical systems so I know these questions are a bit "dumb".) Thanks again, guys! As you can see, I am now really "into" getting this old car in good shape.
